Bioproteins

The previous legislation on Bioproteins, Directive 82/471/EEC (pdf 555Kb) was replaced by Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 (pdf 913Kb) with effect from 01 September 2010. The previous bioprotein legislation was introduced to regulate non-conventional sources of animal proteins used to feed animals e.g. proteins derived from micro-organisms, non-protein nitrogenous products (urea), amino acids and analogs of amino acids. Like feed additives, a product falling within the scope of this legislation could not be fed to animals unless it was specifically authorised.  The main products authorised and used in animal nutrition were brewer's and distiller's yeast’s.  Under the new legislation the requirement for a general pre market authorisation is abolished. These materials will henceforth be considered as feed materials.
