Forestry Research
COFORD (NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR FOREST RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT)
COFORD is a non-statutory agency under the ageis of the Department. COFORD's remit is to fund and co-ordinate research and development projects with the aim of developing the forestry industry through technical innovation and good silvicultural practice.
COFORD was established in 1993 and its objectives are:
- to co-ordinate all forest and forest product research in Ireland and be the link between industrial need and research competence;
- to advise the Minister on programmes of research and development for the sustainable development of the Irish forest industry, including costings and funding protocols;
- to co-ordinate the implementation of approved research programmes funded by the Exchequer and EC;
- to recommend to industry all programmes and projects to be funded or part funded by them;
- to encourage industrial funding of forest and forest product research;
- to encourage Irish participation in EU forest research programmes, including those in developing countries;
- to ensure proper dissemination of forest research findings.
