Minister Smith visits Orchard Home and Garden Centre, Celebridge

Mr Brendan Smith TD, Minister for Food and Horticulture at the Department of Agriculture and Food on a visit to the Orchard Garden Centre today, on the occasion of the official opening of the Christmas shop at the centre, complimented Mr Gerry Dooley on the recent new developments and expansion at the Orchard Home and Garden on the Dublin Road, Celbridge.

Minister Smith referred to the recent Bord Bia research on Horticulture which revealed that the Amenity market has grown by over 70% in value over the past four years to almost €1 billion. This phenomenal growth has been driven by the garden products market and the outdoor plants and flowers market.

Garden centres continue to retain the biggest share of the market for plants and flowers. Consumer spend in these centres has doubled since 2001 from €120m to €240m.

In excess of six and a half million outdoor plants and flowers were purchased in the last year, representing an increase of 27% over the last four years. This amounts to 37% of all purchases in the amenity market. The garden centre products sector has seen a sharp rise in value, increasing by 122% since 2001.

Minister Smith said that this research proves a boost for the future of the amenity and garden centre sector and provides an area of opportunity for garden centres to develop even more into the future.
