Minister Coughlan appoints Chairman of Sheep Strategy Implementation Group

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan T.D., has appointed John Malone as Chairman of the Sheep Strategy Implementation Group. John Malone is a former Secretary General of the Department. He also chaired the Sheep Industry Development Strategy Group whose report was launched by the Minister on 1 June 2006.

Minister Coughlan said that the report, which covers the whole sheep sector from breeding to processing and marketing, contains 37 recommendations. It is important for the future of the sheep industry in Ireland that these recommendations are implemented in a timely fashion. She saw the report as a catalyst for action throughout the sector.

The Minister added that she was contacting the main stakeholders in the industry with the view to seeking nominations for membership of the Sheep Strategy Implementation Group. She wanted the implementation work to commence as quickly as possible.
