Minister Smith opens new Mullingar Showgrounds

Speaking at the official opening of the Mullingar Show, Mr. Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, paid tribute to the "foresight, courage and most importantly hard work" of the committee members of the Westmeath Show Society. In addition to opening this year's show, the Minister also officially opened the new Showgrounds which include an all weather arena and complex.

"The Mullingar show has stood the test of time and gone from strength to strength. This permanent home and the magnificent all weather facilities are a credit to the committee and all the people who make this happen. I think it also important to acknowledge the input of the LEADER programme in this development. An investment of this nature is a statement. A statement from the people of Mullingar and Westmeath that Agriculture and the Rural Community will continue to be an integral part of Westmeath life."

The Minister also unveiled a plaque commemorating the work of all committee members past and present.
