Coughlan meets Latvian Minister

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan T.D., today met with her Latvian Ministerial colleague, Mr Martins Roze, Minister for Agriculture, who is on an official visit to Dublin. Minister Roze is accompanied by senior officials from the Latvian Ministry.

The Ministers and officials met in the Department's offices in Agriculture House for discussions on current developments in relation to EU agriculture and food policy including recent and proposed CAP reforms, WTO, especially sugar, the funding of the CAP and EU rural development policy, bio-energy, milk quotas and animal disease.

In addition to the formal exchange of views, Minister Roze's itinerary includes a farm visit, a visit to a major fruit and vegetable production and distribution enterprise and other activities.

Minister Coughlan said that she was delighted to welcome Minister Roze and his officials to Ireland. She already has a good working relationship with her Ministerial colleague through the EU Agriculture Council and she was pleased that he would now have an appreciation of the situation here and also a good understanding of our position in relation to current issues.

Both Ministers said that they looked forward to working closely together in future. They agreed to continue to share experience and to co-operate and liaise closely on issues of mutual concern.
