Minister Coughlan accepts Annual Report of the Audit Committee of the Department of Agriculture and Food

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan T.D., today accepted the 2005 Annual Report of the Audit Committee of the Department of Agriculture and Food from the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. John Donnelly. This is the eleventh annual report produced by the Audit Committee.

The Minister is pleased to note that in the Annual Report the Chairman of the Audit Committee expressed his satisfaction with the financial management of the demanding and complex programmes operated by the Department of Agriculture and Food. His statement also acknowledged the "superb record of robust financial management within the Department".

The Minister acknowledged the key role the Audit Committee plays in providing her with advice on the operation of the internal audit function within the Department and also in reviewing and monitoring the operation of the Department's Risk Management programme. The Minister stated that a high level of assurance can be taken from the fact that the work of the Department is assessed by an Audit Committee consisting of eight highly qualified and skilled members, all but one of whom are external to the Department itself.

The Minister expressed her gratitude to the members of the Audit Committee for their commitment, advice and for making available so much of their time in their duties as members of the Committee.
