Coughlan hosts visit of Commissioner Fischer Boel to Donegal

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan T.D., hosted a visit by EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel to Donegal today. The Commissioner is visiting Ireland at the invitation of Minister Coughlan and over the past two days has visited Cavan and Donegal where she meet with representatives of the Agri-food sector and farm representatives.

Minister Coughlan held a meeting with the Commissioner this morning where they discussed a number of current issues including;

  • The current situation and future prospects in the World Trade Organisation Talks which are on hold at the moment
  • Future direction of the Common Agricultural Policy
  • Ireland's Rural Development Programme
  • Commissioner Fischer Boel outlined the proposals of the EU Commission in relation to funding for assistance in the production of energy crops which was welcomed by Minister Coughlan as a positive step in developing alternative, agriculture based, sources of energy.

Minister Coughlan updated the Commissioner on developments in relation to the reform of the sugar regime in Ireland which is the subject of judicial proceedings at present. The Minister and Commissioner also discussed matters relating to traceability and labelling.

Following their meeting the Minister brought the Commissioner on a farm visit to see for herself the challenges facing Irish farming in the post decoupling era.
