Minister Smith acknowledges Supervalu part in Irish Food Industry Success

Speaking at the presentation of the SuperValu Awards for Quality and Hygiene, Mr. Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, with special responsibility for Food acknowledged the continued support of the Musgrave SuperValu Centra Group to the Irish food industry.

Acknowledging that the agri-food sector remains Ireland's biggest indigenous industry Minister Smith said "It is a major contributor to the economic and social viability of rural areas, accounting for about 9% of GDP, employment of over 46,000 people, and exports amounting to a record €8 billion in 2006".

Minister Smith said "...SuperValu can be justifiably proud of their role in the success of the agri-food sector through their ongoing commitment to sourcing quality Irish products - 90% sourced through Irish companies -70% produced by Irish companies." Minister Smith went on to say "...maintaining a vibrant agri-food sector is in my view an essential component of a successful national and rural development strategy and provides consumers with a range of produce meeting the most exacting standards of safety, enjoyment and convenience".
