Agri-Vision Forum offers opportunity to share views says Coughlan

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan TD, will host a meeting of senior figures in the Irish agriculture, food and drinks industries in Dublin on 23 March. The meeting will receive the first annual report on the implementation of the Agri-Vision 2015 Action Plan, which was launched by the Minister in March of last year, and will be addressed by a number of prominent international figures.

Holding this "Agri-vision 2015 Stakeholder Forum" fulfils a commitment to do so in the Action Plan.

"This meeting offers the opportunity for the key players in the Irish agri-food sector to hear and consider a range of perspectives on the future challenges and opportunities for the sector internationally and to share their views on what is required for Irish farmers, and the food, drinks and associated industries, to prosper," Minister Coughlan said.

The meeting will hear from a number of speakers, coming from a variety of backgrounds, on key policy and other issues facing the agri-food sector over the coming years. In addition to Minister Coughlan, the speakers at the meeting will include:

  • Mr Peter Mandelson - EU Commissioner for Trade
  • Professor Cees Veerman - former Dutch Minister for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality
  • Professor Robert Thompson - Chair in Agricultural Policy-University of Illinois, and member of the USDA-USTR* Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee for Trade
  • Mr Ray MacSharry - former Tanaiste, Minister for Finance, Minister for Agriculture and EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Minister said that the meeting will provide an important opportunity for stakeholders in the agriculture and food sector to interact directly with the EU commissioner responsible for the vital WTO trade negotiations.

The Minister said she was confident that this meeting would prove useful to all concerned.
