Irish Success in EU Research Programme

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mary Coughlan TD, said today that she was delighted to see Irish researchers recently recognised under the EU programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). Irish researchers are involved in 30% of the recent awards by the EU Commission covering Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The value of funding to Irish researchers is in excess of €3.8 million.

The successful applicants included Teagasc, the Marine Institute, UCD and TCD. The Minister said: "It is important for Irish researchers to participate in European collaborative programmes. This recent success indicates the high quality of research being conducted at Irish research institutes." She congratulated in particular Professor Mike Gibney of UCD who is leading a research team from 14 countries, which will assess food flavours and additives.

The Minister attributed the success of Irish researchers to opportunities, strong research capability and expertise built up under the Food Institutional Research Measure (FIRM) and Stimulus programmes funded by her Department. These programmes had provided a significant amount of national funding to develop the collaboration between research institutions and the know-how which created the conditions for success in the European field and which will undoubtedly assist Irish researchers to compete in future calls under the EU Programme.
