Minister Smith Turns on RDS Christmas Tree Lights

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD, today officially turned on the Christmas tree lights at the RDS, following his presentation of the 'Champion of Champions Awards' there.

Turning on the lights, Minister Smith noted that not only are Christmas trees an integral part of the traditions of the Christmas season, the Christmas tree business, which is part of the amenity sector within the horticulture industry, is a significant business enterprise within the country.

The Minister added that the annual demand in Ireland for Christmas trees is 350,000 to 400,000 and the overall value of the market, encompassing the home and export market, is estimated to be €15 million.

Minister Smith concluded by thanking the RDS for their kind invitation to perform the tree lighting ceremony as a Christmas tree adorned with lights is a welcome sight and sets the scene for the festive season.  He also thanked Coillte for the provision of such a fine tree.
