Minister Smith Announces Grants of €20,000 for Cavan Animal Welfare Bodies

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD, today announced the award of ex-gratia payments of €15,000 to Cavan SPCA and €5,000 to Joan's Arc, Glengevlin to assist in their work during 2010. This is part of an overall package of payments being made immediately to animal welfare organisations throughout the country to assist in their work in 2010.

Minister Smith paid tribute to the animal welfare organisations in Co Cavan and throughout the country and said that "he is confident that this money will be put to good use and as the grants being announced today do not cover the full costs of the increasing demands being placed upon them, these organisations still require the ongoing generous financial support of the general public to enable them to fulfil their mission to promote animal welfare and relieve animal suffering in Ireland".

The Minister said that the funding for animal welfare organisations in the current economic climate is evidence of the Government's commitment in the area of animal welfare. He urged people to "remember the level of care and responsibility required when taking ownership of animals, which often can be forgotten if pets are given as presents and he asked people to heed the advice offered in this regard".
