Minister Sargent Alerts Farmers to 15 May 2009 deadline for Applications for Organic Farming Scheme

Mr. Trevor Sargent T.D., Minister for Food and Horticulture at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, today reminded farmers wanting to join the Organic Farming Scheme in 2009 that they had to have their applications with the Department by 15 May.  This deadline arises from EU Regulations governing the operation of agri-environment schemes, including the Organic Farming Scheme and REPS 4.  Minister Sargent said "It is important that farmers who want to join the Organic Scheme this year are aware of the time-frame within which they must apply"

The deadline rules apply to all farmers joining the Scheme, whether or not they intend to join REPS 4 as well. REPS 3 farmers wanting to convert to organics and join the new Organic Farming Scheme must transform to REPS 4.

It is important to note that there can be no payment in 2009 for any application for the Organic Farming Scheme received by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food after 15 May 2009.
