Minister Smith Responds To Publication Of Oireachtas Committee's Report

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD, today said that he had noted the publication, by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, of a report on their examination of the contamination of Irish pork products in December 2008.

Minister Smith recalled that, when he appeared before the Committee in January, he confirmed that an inter-agency review group had been established under the chairmanship of Dr Patrick Wall of UCD to consider whatever adjustments of controls are necessary in the light of experience gained in dealing with the dioxin contamination incident.

The Minister said that he had, at the time, made it clear that the inter-agency group should take into take into account the recommendations of the Oireachtas Committee as well as various submissions it had received from the public.

The work of the inter-agency group is continuing, under Professor Wall's chairmanship, and it will report to both the Minister for Health and Children and the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
