Minister Smith Welcomes Proposed Appointment of New EU Commissioners

"I very much welcome the proposed appointment of Dacian Ciolos as Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development. Dacian is a former colleague of mine in the EU Agriculture Council of Ministers, having served as Romanian Minister for Agriculture until December of last year. I am pleased to see that such a well-informed professional from one of the smaller Member States has been proposed for this challenging post and I look forward to working closely with him in the years ahead.

I am also very pleased at the proposed appointment of Máire Geoghegan-Quinn to the Research and Innovation portfolio. I am sure that Máire will be a very able addition to the Commission team and I wish her every success in the years to come. Research and Innovation are, of course, crucially important for the future development of the agri-food sector."
