Minister Smith launches the 'Healthy Forests, Healthy People' Exhibition

Brendan Smith TD, Minister at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, today officially launched the 'Healthy Forests Healthy People' Exhibition in Johnstown Central Library, Farnham Street, Cavan.

The aim of this exhibition is to raise awareness about the recreational, environmental and management of biodiversity on Coillte's forestry estates.  Speaking at the launch, Minister Smith commented "This exhibition will show that Coillte is making its contribution towards 'healthy people' by the provision of more that 150 recreation sites, 10 forest parks and over 2,000 kilometres of walking and cycling trails throughout the country". The Minister also referred to the health of the planet and commented upon the hugely positive role of forests in the overall approach to climate change.

Minister Smith noted the recreational and environmental benefits of forestry, which are displayed in the exhibition, adding that "Another aspect of Coillte's work which this exhibition showcases is its work on habitat restoration.  The company has been involved in habitat restoration for the last seven years with the aid of funding from the EU under the LIFE-Nature programme".  Minister Smith invited people to visit the exhibition during its stay in Cavan to avail of the opportunity it presented to develop awareness of forestry and its many benefits.

The exhibition will be on display in the Library until 28th September 2009.  It has already been on show in Dublin, Kilkenny and Wexford and is scheduled to visit other locations during the coming months.

Date Released: 17 September 2009
