Minister Smith opens 'Healthy People, Healthy Forests' Exhibition in Clones

Brendan Smith, TD, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, today opened Coillte's 'Healthy People, Healthy Forests' exhibition at Clones Public Library, Co Monaghan.

The exhibition brings together information on a number of Coillte's significant projects and activities in managing the environment and aims to give people a better understanding of the management of public forests. Minister Smith thanked Coillte for organising such an informative and interesting exhibition and Monaghan County Council for hosting it. The Minister urged people to avail of the opportunity to experience the exhibition for themselves.

Welcoming the display of the exhibition in Clones Library, Minister Smith said "Healthy Forests, Healthy People is an exhibition showcasing the environmental and recreational amenity provided by Irish forests.  It features recreation, habitat restoration and management of biodiversity - all of which are very important but sometimes people are not fully aware of what is actually involved.  It is particularly timely, as The United Nations has designated 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity".

Minister Smith noted the contribution forestry makes by way of employment, tourism, enhancement of biodiversity and the provision of recreational facilities as well as its traditional role as the source of timber and wood energy. The Minister thanked all those who attended and concluded by encouraging as many people as possible to visit and experience this exceptional exhibition.
