Minister Smith Meets Polish Minister

As part of a series of engagements with Ministerial colleagues in other EU Member States in preparation for the upcoming review of the CAP, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD met today with Mr Marek Sawicki, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in Warsaw.

After the meeting the Minister said "We had a very useful and productive discussion.  I conveyed Ireland's vision for a strong and properly funded CAP after 2013.  The key context for Ireland is food supply and sustainable management of natural resources, including climate change.  We want a coherent approach based on family farm structure that focuses on underlining the competitiveness of EU agriculture. I am happy to say that Minister Sawicki shared this perspective and I believe we have formed a good basis for further joint work on this vital issue for both our countries".

The Ministers also shared their concerns regarding the impact on the agriculture sector of an agreement with the MERCOSUR group of countries.  They also touched on the recommendations of the High Level Group on Milk and discussed the possible content of the proposals expected from the EU Commission later in the year. Minister Smith said "I am glad to have had these discussions with Minister Sawicki and I wish the Polish Ministry every success with their Presidency next year".
