Minister Smith opens new Limerick Greyhound Stadium

Greyhound industry makes substantial contribution to Irish economy

Speaking at the official opening of the new greyhound stadium in Limerick, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD, highlighted the important contribution that greyhound racing makes to the economy.  Pointing out that the greyhound racing industry supports 11,000 jobs and contributes €500 million to the economy, the Minister referred to the substantial funding of €134 million provided to the sector by the Government since 2001, which the Minister said "has greatly assisted its growth and development."

Minister Smith congratulated Bord na gCon and the other stakeholders involved in the delivery of the new stadium, including the contractors and the greyhound breeders, owners and trainers.  The Minister paid particular credit to the Limerick and Clare Greyhound Owners & Breeders Association, noting that "their tenacity in pursuing the development of improved facilities in Limerick never waned as well as all the faithful punters of the region who have gallantly supported the greyhound industry down the years".

The Minister also noted that "in order to attract premier racing and the support of the greyhound racing public the product offering must attain the highest standards. Bord na gCon, led by its Chairman Dick O' Sullivan, together with Limerick Greyhound Stadium and its Chairman Tony McKenna, have gone to great lengths to put in place a top of the range facility with a wide variety of packages to suit the entire spectrum from the informed follower of greyhounds to the casual punter. Quality is the byword in this stadium It pervades every aspect of the development".

The Minister concluded by congratulating "all involved in the long journey in bringing this magnificent stadium into being" and wishing everybody "many happy nights racing here and great success in the future", before declaring the new stadium officially open.
