Coveney Appoints New Chairperson of Bord na gCon

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, today confirmed the appointment of Mr Phil Meaney as chairperson of Bord na gCon, in succession to Mr Dick O'Sullivan, who retired from his position last month.

Minister Coveney described Mr Meany as "eminently well qualified for this appointment, given both his successful business background and his involvement in the greyhound industry over a period of 25 years, including his recently-held position as chairman of the Kilkenny Greyhound Company Limited."

The Minister said that Bord na gCon has "a very important role to play in the improvement and development of the Irish greyhound industry and I am pleased that somebody of Mr Meaney's experience has agreed to take on the role of chairman at this challenging time and I wish him every success during his term of office."

Note for Editors:

The appointment of the chairperson of Bord na gCon is made, pursuant to section 8(1) of the Greyhound Industry Act 1958, by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, following consultation with the Minister for Finance.

Mr Phil Meaney, who is from Co Carlow, is a recently retired businessman and has been involved in the greyhound industry for 25 years. He is the immediate past chairman of the Kilkenny Greyhound Company Limited (Kilkenny track), a position from which he has resigned pursuant to the requirements of section 8(3) of the Greyhound Industry Act 1958. Mr Meaney has also been a member of the executive committee of the Irish Coursing Club (for the past four years) and a member of the finance committee of the Irish Coursing Club, positions from which he is also standing down.
