Minister Smith thanks outgoing Chairman of Bord Na gCon

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith, today paid tribute to and thanked the outgoing Chairman of Bord na gCon, Dick O'Sullivan, who has left his position with effect from today (16th February 2011).

Minister Smith said "Dick O'Sullivan has given tremendous service and leadership to Bord na gCon and the Irish greyhound racing industry since he joined the board and in the nearly five years since he became chairman in 2006.  During his term as chairman, the industry has thrived and Dick has ensured that he will leave Bord na gCon and the greyhound racing industry in a very strong position."

The Minister said that "in the short time since my Department has resumed responsibility for the greyhound racing industry, I have developed a very good relationship with Bord na gCon and its board and I am grateful to the outgoing chairman for the co-operation and assistance in that regard and, in particular, for their recent assistance in the preparation of the Welfare of Greyhounds Bill, which I published late last year and which met with widespread industry and political approval."

Minister Smith concluded by wishing Mr O'Sullivan every success in the future.
