McEntee applauds the co-operation of the public and private sectors in coming together to deliver expanded and upgraded facilities at Thurles Greyhound Stadium

Shane McEntee TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine speaking at the official opening of the extension to Thurles Greyhound Stadium said that he would like to "congratulate the promoters of this development, at this privately owned track, on seeing the project through to completion.  Much credit must go to Bord na gCon for their investment in the industry and all those involved in the greyhound industry on the growth of the industry over the last number of years. Co-operation between Bord na gCon, dog owners, breeders, trainers, private stadia operators, bookmakers and sponsors has ensured that the industry is where it is now." The Minister noted in particular the contributions of Mr Kevin Dwan, Mr Denis O'Meara and the Track Supporters Club in Thurles.

The Minister said "The people of Thurles can be proud. This facility is on a par with the best available. The upgrading, re-configuration and expansion of the accommodation available for patrons that we celebrate here tonight is a fitting continuation of the on-track enhancements that were undertaken here two years ago. I am very glad to hear that the feedback from patrons has been very positive and that numbers are up."

The Minister referred to the important economic contribution made by the greyhound industry annually estimated at €500m and supporting in excess of 10,000 jobs throughout the country.

The Minister thanked the former Chairman of Bord na gCon, Mr Dick O'Sullivan, "on the major contribution he made to the industry during his time on the Board of Bord na gCon." The Minister noted that "under Dick's direction Bord na gCon pursued an agenda of excellence via improved standards, facilities, oversight, governance, administration and cost reduction."

Minister McEntee also made special mention of the newly appointed Chairman to Bord na gCon, Mr Phil Meaney, wishing Mr Meaney "every success as he takes over at the helm. The Minister acknowledged "the important roles that Phil, the Board members of Bord na gCon, the CEO Adrian Neilan and his team, have to play in the on-going growth and development of this very important indigenous industry."

The Minister brought his remarks to a close wishing "all those associated with the greyhound industry and in particular those associated with this stadium every success for 2011 and beyond."
