Minister McEntee Officially Opens Sheep 2012 at Teagasc Athenry

Shane McEntee TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, today officially opened Sheep 2012 at Teagasc Athenry, Co. Galway.

Speaking at the event, he said "This is the major Industry event of the year for all stakeholders in the sheep sector.  The outlook for the sheep sector is positive, and I commend all stakeholders for coming together to showcase all aspects of sheep production in one excellent location. Food Harvest 2020 sets a target of 20% increase in output value for the sheep sector and envisages that over the coming years, demand for sheepmeat on the European market will outstrip production levels which should provide opportunities for exporting countries such as Ireland. This should provide the potential for better returns, provided the industry can continue the market and product diversification which has been evident in recent years".

The Minister continued "a range of events and activities are planned for the day including technical seminars and workshops, research demonstration flock updates, sheep breed competitions, sheep dog displays and Bord Bia cookery demonstrations. The day will appeal to all involved in the sector, and will prove both educational and informative".

The Minister thanked the organisers including Teagasc, UCD, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Irish Farmers Journal, Bord Bia, Meat processors and Sheep Ireland for their efforts in staging the event. He also thanked Musgraves and Kepak for their generous overall sponsorship.

Date Released: 30 June 2012
