Minister Coveney talks CAP reform with Baltic countries

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, is on a visit to the three Baltic Member States this week.  The visit is part of Ireland's preparations for the Presidency of the EU from January to June next year when Minister Coveney will chair the EU Council of Agriculture Ministers.

The Minister said, "In the first half of next year, there is an expectation that Ireland will steer through the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy. This is a major challenge for Ireland, as the issues involved are complex and important to all Member States, not least because of the need to also get agreement on the next seven year term (2014-2020) for the EU budget.  In the event that the financial and budget issues are decided this year, I want to be well placed to secure an agreement on reforms of the CAP in the first half of 2013 and it is important that I understand the crunch issues for all countries involved.  With a view to understanding the various perspectives that will be on the table, I have already, since the beginning of the year, had bilateral meetings with my counterparts from more than a dozen Member States".

"I have taken the time to travel to the Baltic countries (Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia) to hear directly about the key points for them in the negotiations and see how we can work together to secure an agreement that is good for European agriculture and, of course, good for Ireland.  I stressed the importance of our countries working together to defend the CAP Budget as a first priority".

The Minister is planning further meetings with other Member States over the coming weeks and months.  He is also undertaking a series of engagements with the Commission and key Members of the European Parliament.
