Minister Coveney Announces Further Extension to Deadline for Submission of Applications Under the Sow Welfare Scheme

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, today announced that the deadline for submission of applications under the revised TAMS Sow Welfare Scheme introduced by his Department last July was now being further extended from end-January 2013 to 2 April 2013.

The Minister stated that he was aware that a small number of pig producers were still encountering problems in obtaining planning permission and that, as a result, he was now prepared to provide this final extension in order to assist pig producers in this regard. The final tranche under the Scheme will therefore close on Tuesday, 2 April 2013.   The balance of the €3m which remains unused following the closure of the current tranche on 31 January 2013 will be made available for this new final tranche. The other conditions in the Scheme will remain unchanged, including the final date for completion of work and lodgement of a payment claim of end-September 2013.

The Minister reiterated that this final extension for receipt of applications under the Scheme is not an extension of the deadline for compliance with sow welfare legislation and reminds farmers that it is an offence to keep pigs in non-compliant housing after 1st January 2013.
