Hayes Presents the 'Wood Awards Ireland 2014'

Tom Hayes, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, presented the inaugural ‘Wood Awards Ireland’ at a gala event this evening in Dublin Castle.

Speaking at the event, Minister Hayes commented that “Tonight’s Wood Awards is not only a competition between individuals or companies in the various categories, it also serves as a showcase for Irish timber, for our timber sector and what can be achieved by highly innovative and skilled practitioners working in timber” and added “It is important that we have such showcases for Irish forestry, because it is one of our best natural resources, a renewable and sustainable resource, and the raw material for our sawmilling and timber processing sector.”

The Wood Awards Ireland 2014 is a new competition organised by the Wood Marketing Federation and supported by the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, with additional support from the American Hardwood Export Council, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Enterprise Ireland and Coillte. The competition was aimed at registered architects, engineers and designers who feature wood as an inherent medium in construction and design projects with theAward categories including large-scale publicbuildings, small private buildings, restoration and conservation projects and furniture. Awards were also presented in ‘innovation’ and ‘international’ categories.

The Minister also noted that the gala event was “both a celebration of 25 years of the Wood Marketing Federation and the announcement of the winners of the Wood Awards Ireland 2014”. He congratulated the Wood Marketing Federation, which was founded in 1989 to promote wood, sourced in sustainably managed forests, saying “I am sure that you will all agree that it has consistently achieved its purpose, through hard work, commitment, innovative approaches and partnerships with a wide range of companies and organisations, throughout the last 25 years.
