Training of "Responsible Persons" in Accordance with Animal Remedies Regulations

Under Regulation 32 of the European Communities (Animal Remedies) (No. 2) Regulations, 2007, (SI 786 of 2007), a person responsible for the retail sale or supply of animal remedies, and who is not a vet, a pharmacist or a registered nurse, must undergo adequate training in the proper and safe handling and storage of animal remedies.

Applicants for approval as course providers

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine approves all courses for the training of responsible persons. From 1 January 2013, these courses must be FETAC accredited. Prior to approval, course providers must forward the following:

  • FETAC certification
  • A copy of the course content
  • A breakdown of course hours

to Ms Michelle Cawley, Veterinary Medicines Section, Admin Building, Backweston Campus, Young’s Cross, Celbridge Co.  Kildare  or email

Any general enquiries concerning responsible persons’ training courses should be addressed as indicated above or to Tel 01 5058669.

Applicants to become a “responsible person”

Applicants have a duty to ensure they receive their training from a Department approved course provider. An application for an animal remedies merchant’s licence will not be considered unless the responsible person named in the application has completed a Department approved course.

Applications listing a “responsible person” who has either:

(a)          Not completed a course, or

(b)          Completed a course neither FETAC accredited nor provided by a Department approved trainer, or

(c)          Completed a course which is FETAC accredited but not provided by a Department approved trainer,

will be deemed invalid.

The 3 companies listed in the table below have had their courses approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for training of “responsible persons”. Details in respect of upcoming courses can be obtained by contacting the individual providers via the details below.
