Information Notice VMS 2/2018 - Availability of Equine Rotavirus Vaccine

To: Equine Veterinary Practitioners

Subject: Lack of Availability of Vaccine for Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA)

Ireland is EVA free and operates a voluntary vaccination programme to reduce the risk of the virus being introduced into the country.

The voluntary vaccination programme for stallions involves the use of ‘Equip Artervac’ manufactured by Zoetis. This is the only authorised product in the European Union for the immunisation of stallions and teasers against EVA. Itreduces both clinical signs and post-infection virus shedding

  •  The Department became aware late last week of a shortage of Artervac.
  • The latest information from Zoetis anticipates that stocks of Artervac will not be available on the market in Ireland until February  2019.
  • Registered veterinary practitioners can continue to apply for the vaccine to the DAFM Virology Division using the normal ‘EVA 1’ form.

Further updates will be issued as soon as information is made available to DAFM.
