Coillte Teoranta

Coillte Teoranta is a commercial State company, which operates forestry, land management, panel products and renewable energy businesses.  The company is co-owned by the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.  The company was established under the Forestry Act 1988 which inter alia sets out its objectives and duties.

The principal objectives of the company, as provided in Section 12 of the Forestry Act 1988, are:

  • To carry on the business of forestry and related activities on a commercial basis and in accordance with efficient silvicultural activities,
  • To establish and carry on woodland industries,
  • To participate with others in forestry and related activities consistent with its objects, designed to enhance the effective and profitable operation of the company, and
  • To utilise and manage the resources available to it in a manner consistent with the above objects.

Points of interest

  • The company manages an estate of some 440,000 hectares of which 351,000 hectares are forested.
  • Coillte Forests have been FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified since 2001 - the certification process requires Coillte to demonstrate that their forests are managed in accordance with strict social, environmental and economic criteria.
  • It is the principal supplier of logs to the sawmill industry.
  • Coillte has ten forest parks, over 150 recreation sites and three mountain bike facilities and manages over 50% of all the off road national long distance hiking routes.
  • The company is also involved in the operation of the adventure park in Lough Key Forest Park, Co. Roscommon.
  • The company has a number of subsidiaries, including;
    • Smartply Europe - a manufacturing facility in Waterford where it manufactures Oriented Strand Board (OSB) wood panels for the Irish, UK and European markets.
    • Medite Europe - a manufacturing facility in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary where it manufactures medium density fibreboard (mdf).
  • The company is developing a leading position in renewable energy as a provider and developer of windfarm sites and biomass heat solutions.
