Forest Map Viewer Disclaimer

The Forestry layer is comprised of two primary spatial data sets: 1. Premiums extract, (forest currently in receipt of premium payments and funded under the Department's afforestation schemes), extracted from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine's Land Parcel Information System (LPIS). Premium spatial data has been extracted from the LPIS database up until the year 2013. 2. other legacy FIPS98 polygons (all other areas classified as forest under the FIPS98 project (see also below)) not included in the Premiums extract.

In 1995, a national forest mapping project was carried out as part of the FIPS (Forest Inventory and Planning System) project. Using a combination of satellite imagery and GIS data an analysis of forest cover in Ireland was conducted to classify forest cover in Ireland into one of 20 broad species and development classes. Panchromatic aerial photographs were then used to enhance the spatial accuracy and where necessary the classification accuracy. Other available datasets for the country included a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of 25m resolution, the Ordnance Survey (OS) 25" (1:2,500) raster maps, the Department of Agriculture's Land Parcel Identification System (LPIS) and the administration boundary data. The final overall accuracy of the forest map produced was 88%. The forest cover spatial data arising from the FIPS project are referred to as FIPS98.

Note: These Forestry spatial data sets are provisional in that they are a record of the Departments holdings at the moment. They are not published as legal definitions of the current actuality with regard to their geographic extent. They may contain errors and omissions and it should also be noted that the data cannot be taken as being absolutely current. Therefore they should be treated as indicative of the actual geographic situation. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will accept no liability for any loss or damage suffered by those using this data for any purpose whatsoever.

The contents of these Forestry datasets are provided as an information guide only. While every effort is made in preparing material for publication no responsibility is accepted by or on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for any errors, omissions or misleading information in these Forestry datasets.
